Luxembourg's Prime Minister did not make it to the EU Africa summit in Angola at the weekend as planned due to travel issues.
Media outlet Euractiv suggested the reason for Frieden's absence was down to a technical fault with a Lufthansa aircraft at Frankfurt airport. As a result, the scheduled flight to Luanda did not depart as planned on Sunday evening.
The next flight did not leave Frankfurt until over 12 hours later due to the ban on night flights, which meant Frieden would not have arrived in Angola until the summit was virtually over. As a result, the decision was made for the Prime Minister not to fly.
The Ministry of State confirmed this series of events when questioned by RTL.
Frieden was not the only leader affected by the issue, as both Kaja Kallas, vice-president of the European Commission, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen were also grounded.
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo made it to Angola, albeit with a significant delay.
It appears that the technical issue in question affected the system used to make announcements on board the aircraft.
