This Thursday, the Take Back The Night march seeks to reclaim the streets and raise awareness of violence against women.
In 2022, 224 women were victims of domestic violence in the Grand Duchy. One in four women say they have experienced sexual violence at least once in their lifetime.
On Thursday evening, the Take Back The Night event invites people to join a collective march against violence directed at women, in a bid to make Luxembourg's streets safer.
Demonstrators are invited to assemble at ING in Luxembourg City's Gare district, where a number of speeches will take place before the march kicks off. The march will follow a route through the capital to the Glacis, where an afterparty will be accompanied by food trucks and a live DJ.
The event is supported by ING, POST & LUX WMN, as well as Femmes en Détresse and representatives from the city council. Pre-registration is encouraged and participation is free, although other tickets are available.
On International Women's Day earlier this month, feminist platform JIF said that although Luxembourg had made progress, there was still a long way to go before securing gender equality in the Grand Duchy, highlighting inequalities in maternity and paternity leave, among others.
The association argued in favour of adjusting the tax system to benefit single parents, 80% of whom are female, and said that long waiting lists for women's shelters in Luxembourg were putting domestic abuse victims at risk of homelessness.
