The weather is set to take a cold turn, with freezing temperatures predicted and a possibility of snow – meaning winter tyres will be required.

Luxembourg has enjoyed an exceptionally mild November so far, with temperatures approaching 20°C on several days this week. The weather is now set to turn markedly more seasonal.

Temperatures will peak at around 14°C on Saturday, with showers possible overnight. On Sunday, the cloud cover will persist and temperatures are unlikely to exceed 12°C.

Are winter tyres necessary?

The cold snap is expected to begin on Monday, with morning temperatures of about 2°C rising to 7°C under thick cloud. Tuesday will bring the first sub-zero readings of the season, falling to around -3°C in some areas. Meteolux warns that light snowfall is possible on Wednesday, along with gusts reaching 45 km/h. The risk of snow continues into Thursday, with early temperatures of about -1°C.

In Luxembourg, winter tyres are mandatory when the weather conditions require them. The Highway Code says winter tyres must be used in cases of "black ice, packed snow, slush, or patches of ice and frost." Time to get those tyres on, or book an appointment at your garage!
