The Music Days festival in Vianden launched its seventh edition with a concert dedicated to funeral music, held two days before All Saints’ Day.
The event brought together the Ensemble Vocal du Luxembourg, organist Paul Kayser, and the Sacqueboutes du Nord, a historical brass ensemble, under the direction of conductor Matthias Rajczy.
Rajczy explained that performing funeral music outside the context of mourning reveals new emotional nuances.
He also noted that when listeners are not personally affected by grief, they can become more aware of the comforting and tense elements built into the music, which are often missed during actual funeral rites.
Known for staging remarkable concerts in exceptional locations, Music Days began this year with a focus on funerary works. On 31 October, the festival presented a Halloween concert at Vianden Castle, and three more events are scheduled in the coming days.
Jerry Gaudront of Kammerata Luxembourg, a chamber music ensemble, highlighted the variety of the music range and mentioned that the programme also includes jazz in the old cinema.
One particularly notable event will be a candle-lit concert at Vianden Castle, which places chamber music at the centre of the experience.
The candle-lit concert is set for the late afternoon of 8 November and will feature works by Franz Schubert and Louise Farrenc.
The festival is organised by Kammerata Luxembourg, with support from the Friends of Vianden Castle and the local commune, aiming to unite music and history through its programming.

Music Days conclude with final concerts on 6 and 8 November. Further information is available here.
