Next Friday, 1 May marks Labour Day, a public holiday honouring workers and their achievements. While rooted in the history of labour movements, the day is now also an occasion for traditions, local events and spending time with family.
We also have the traditional Meekranz, so expect to see plenty of beautiful wreaths around the Grand Duchy (and surroundings).
For families looking to make the most of the day, a range of activities across Luxembourg and nearby Belgium offer something for all ages.
The Independent Luxembourg Trade Union Confederation (OGBL) hosts its main Labour Day celebration at Neimënster on 1 May, with workshops, children's entertainment, and a magic show.
Across Wallonia, 31 castles will open to the public, offering guided tours alongside games and family-friendly activities.
The Zolwer Kletterklub marks 1 May with a traditional Meekranz day, where participants walk to the forest to gather greenery for the wreath, followed by a barbecue.
A second Meekranz event takes place in Greiveldange, Stadtbredimus, centred on the tradition of gathering greenery in the Greiweldange forest.
Meeting point: Centre Culturel 'Veräinsbau', Greiveldange
The fun fair (Kiermes) in Remich offers rides, games, and stalls selling drinks, snacks, and sweets. The fair runs until 10 May 2026.
Alongside the Octave, the traditional Mäertchen takes place at Place Guillaume II. Originally a market for pilgrims, it has developed into a lively fair with food, games and stalls, while retaining its traditional appeal.
