The three-year-old, presumably not overly enamored with the finer nuances of Katharina Fritsch’s feted Fliege (Fly) sculpture, may have mistaken it for a real life beasty and gave it a shove, knocking it to the floor.
According to Austrian news site NAU, the plastic sculpture was being displayed at US gallery ‘Matthew Marks’ as Art Basel international art fair when the wee one caused a teensy, tiny scene. The faux insect’s wings fell off and the mother was in a bit of tizzy wondering what the cost was going to be.
Luckily the piece was not permanently damaged. Phew.
An Art Basel spokeswoman says that while the fair is “aware of the incident” it was “informed by the gallery that the work was not damaged” and declined to share more detail on the incident at the request of the gallery.
