There we were, bathing in nostalgia from the 2000s and 2010s, watching one of the biggest influences on electronic dance music perform in an open air concert in Luxembourg. What more could one ask for?
The evening kicked off with DJ sets by Nico Beiler, Miss Sappho, NOSI, and Tyson O'Brien, setting the stage on fire and keeping the crowd engaged and excited. Despite the weeks of horrible weather leading up to this night, the evening blessed us with perfect conditions, heightening the good vibes spread throughout the crowd. As the sun set, painting the sky in beautiful colors, people enjoyed the music and their drinks & food, while dancing, chatting, and simply having fun.
But this was only the beginning. By the time Calvin Harris finally took the stage at 10:30 pm, the stars began to appear. Dancing to "This Is What You Came For," I looked up at the sky and realised, yes, this is exactly what I came for. The open air brought a captivating atmosphere to the concert, and I felt grateful to experience this live with my friends. Although it was a little chilly at times, I didn't matter because I quickly warmed up by joining the crowd's energetic dancing. It was surprising how many people were dancing. Those familiar with Luxembourg will understand me when I say that concert crowds seem more energetic now than ever before. As I looked around, I couldn't help but smile at everyone jumping around—there's something uniquely human about witnessing people enjoying music together. Don't even get me started on the vibes when Dua Lipa's "One Kiss" came on. The crowd was almost louder than the DJ himself.
At one point, I noticed a 10-year-old in front of me who had taken off his noise reduction headphones and was simply taking in the moment. I pointed at him and loudly declared "He is now my spirit animal !" Indeed, he perfectly summarised the overall vibe.
Calvin Harris masterfully blended his legendary songs with iconic techno beat drops. The drop after "I Need Your Love" featuring Ellie Goulding quickly became my favourite—it added a certain fresh edge to the song. However, the highlight of the show for me was when Harris remixed "How Deep Is Your Love" with Hans Zimmer's "Time" from the movie Inception. He managed to blend classical music with contemporary hits, creating a very special moment, especially because it was played live under the stars (I know I keep talking about the stars, but I absolutely loved the setting!)
There was never a dull moment, in part thanks to the dazzling light show Calvin Harris put on (I would, however, not recommend such a concert for people with epilepsy, the lights were flashing like crazy). Whether synchronising perfectly with the beat or coming from his DJ desk — which was decked out with jellyfish and psychedelic geometric patterns — every visual added to the experience. The 1:30 hour went by so quickly, with Harris playing mainly his top beats like "We found love" with our favorite Rihanna.
I can only conclude with one statement, that it was truly an experience to remember. The pure nostalgia I felt mixed with the simple enjoyment of having a great time at the LuxExpo Open-Air Venue, it definitely left a mark on my 2024 summer. And I'm sure many others felt the same.
