The Luxembourgish actress, Vicky Krieps, won the European Film Awards for her role in Corsage.

On Saturday (December 10), the 35th edition of the European Film Awards took place at the Harpa concert hall in Reykjavik, Iceland.

The Luxembourgish actress, Vicky Krieps, known for her roles in international productions, such as Phantom Thread, Gutland, and Bergman Island, won the award for the Best European Actress.

Corsage

In Corsage, she plays the Empress Elisabeth of Austria, the wife of Emperor Franz Joseph I. The film takes place in 1877 and focuses on the strict and representative nature of her role, centred on rigorous daily routines of activities like fasting, hairdressing, and measuring her waist. Elisabeth increasingly rebels against her courtly corset and the image continuously imposed on her.

Krieps did not attend the ceremony in person but participated through a video conference. Her laid-back presence has been already coined as "instantly iconic" on Twitter, as she appeared on the ceremony's big screen wearing a hoodie and a baseball cap.

The actress dedicated the award to "women around the world who need to be seen and heard". She stated that women "need to free themselves and heal from deep wounds" that have been carried for "generations".
