The incident took place in a Hesperange primary school on Thursday. The victim was a young girl in Cycle 2.
The public prosecutor's office confirmed in a statement that the man had accompanied his niece to the school on Thursday morning, hiding in the toilets after he had dropped her off. He then was able to attack another child from his hiding place.
The suspect fled the school after the assault, but was quickly identified and arrested later on Thursday. He was brought before magistrates on Friday morning.
Reports suggest the man was permitted to enter the school because of his familial relationship with another pupil.
Parents within the school community were informed of the incident on Friday. The victim's class has been offered psychological support.
The suspect will meanwhile be held in custody while an investigation is carried out.
