Luxembourgish rapper Maz Universe is taking his music beyond European borders for the first time, joining forces with neoclassical jazz trio Dock In Absolute for an experimental collaboration at Taiwan's Taichung Jazz Festival.
In recent years, Maz Univerze has been gaining traction abroad, performing at Sziget Festival in Budapest in 2022 and 2025, Bittersweet Festival in Poland, and supporting global acts like Nicki Minaj and Juice WRLD, Asia was not initially on his 2025 agenda. "I've never been to Asia in general. I've never performed on another continent. This is the first time", the rapper explained.
The performance in Taichung, a two-hour drive from Taiwan's capital Taipei, is the first of two shows in the country. The collaboration with Dock In Absolute came together earlier this year when the jazz trio reached out via Instagram, seeking a vocalist for a new project. "They said they wanted to try something different, liked what I do, and asked if I would join them. I didn't hesitate for a minute and immediately said yes."
However, he won't be performing any of his existing songs in their original form. The collaboration with Dock In Absolute allowed for an entirely new musical experiment. "We're not playing anything that's really mine", he said, adding, "There are lyrics that have been used in my music, but otherwise it's truly a collaboration of tracks that didn't exist before."
A second performance will take place in Taipei over the weekend, marking a further step in the young rapper's venture into the Asian market. Earlier this year, the Luxembourgish artist released his second full-length album, Little Prince, followed by a series of singles that began rolling out in September, the most recent, Fall From Grace, drops today, coinciding with his performances in Taiwan.
