Tomorrowland's organisers say the festival may not go ahead this weekend after a fire destroyed the main stage, leaving the decision in the hands of emergency services.

A fire that broke out Wednesday evening has destroyed the main stage at Tomorrowland in Boom, Belgium, casting doubt over whether the world-famous electronic dance music festival can still take place this weekend. Organisers say the decision now rests with the fire department.

"The only certainty we have is the opening of the campsite", festival spokesperson Debby Wilmsen said in an interview with VRT, adding it would be "an emotional catastrophe" if the event had to be cancelled.

Luxembourgish DJs Nosi and Ogazon are among this year’s performers. Talks between organisers and firefighters are meanwhile said to be ongoing.

DreamVille, the festival's campsite, is still set to open at 5pm on Thursday, and organisers say they are working to find alternatives after the stage collapse. However, cancellation is no longer being ruled out, according to several Belgian media reports.

The fire is believed to have started around 6pm, possibly due to pyrotechnics, though the exact cause remains under investigation.

Tens of thousands of music fans are expected this weekend, with another wave due for the second weekend, July 25–27. Last year's edition drew 400,000 visitors.
