The list of opponents the Red Lions will face for the World Cup qualifiers in group A are now known. Along with Northern Ireland and Slovakia, the Red Lions will face against Germany.

It was a known fact since December 2024 that the Red Lions would face Northern Ireland and Slovakia for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in group A, which consists of four teams. The last team the Red Lions will face was determined through the quarterfinal of the Nations League between Germany and Italy. In the first leg game, Germany was victorious winning 2-1. And yet, on Sunday evening, Germany let their 3-0 advantage slip away, ending with a 3-3 draw with Italy.

The German team is now not only qualified for the Nations League semifinals, but also completes group A – discouraging news for Red Lions coach Luc Holtz, who would have preferred Italy as the Red Lions' last opponent. The qualifying round will begin on 4 September, with the Red Lions facing Northern Ireland followed by a match against Slovakia three days later in the Stade de Luxembourg. The qualifying rounds then end with two matches against Germany in Sinsheim on 10 October and 14 November in Luxembourg, respectively.

The Luxembourg Football Federation set up a friendly match against Sweden last Saturday as warm-up for the World Cup qualifiers. Another friendly will take place against Switzerland on Tuesday.
