With a focus on expanding opportunities for athletes and enhancing local sports infrastructure, the Luxembourg government has approved a 62% increase in sports funding for the coming year.
On Thursday morning, the state budget for 2025 was approved, with a significant boost for sports funding. Minister of Sport Georges Mischo announced in a video on social media that €66 million will be allocated to sports next year, marking a 62% increase compared to 2023.
This funding will support the Luxembourg Olympic and Sporting Committee (COSL) and various federations, which encompass 1,300 clubs and 136,000 licenced athletes. They will benefit from a wider range of services, backed by €13.6 million – a 50% increase over 2024.
Additionally, the government plans to invest €5 million in modernising sports infrastructures in both elite and recreational sectors. Over the next five years, a total of €130 million will be allocated for new facilities, including public swimming pools and sports complexes.
Minister Mischo also highlighted the importance of promoting sports at the local level. To this end, the government will invest approximately €1 million in 2025 to enhance physical activity programmes and offer a broader range of sports opportunities in municipalities.
Finally, Mischo emphasised the key role that sports play in education, integration, and inclusion. The government aims to pursue an inclusive and proactive sports policy, he said.
