FC Differdange made history by clinching their first-ever league title with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over local rivals Progrès Niederkorn on Monday night, securing their place in Luxembourg football lore.
After Progrès Niederkorn celebrated a victory in the Luxembourg Cup on Thursday evening, local rivals FC Differdange in return made history on Monday night by winning the first BGL Ligue title in the club's history. It was already clear ahead of the derby that a win would be enough to secure the title, an achievement that Niederkorn sought to avert on their home ground even though the club has already ensured European qualification.
It was a balanced encounter for most of the game, but tensions did rise after 20 minutes, with referee Jérémy Muller needing to step in to separate players from both sides. Four yellow cards were awarded in the aftermath of the situation. A similar brawl unfolded in the 34th minute, with two more yellow cards shown as a result.
Top championship striker Jorginho finally scored the first and only goal of the game after an assist from Franzoni in minute 61. It was the striker's 24th goal and probably the most important one.
The game subsequently had to be interrupted as fans threw flares onto the pitch. Differdange managed to control the rest of playtime, however, and eventually celebrated their first title win as the referee blew the final whistle.
The Differdange Red Boys, the predecessors of what is today known as the FC Differdange, won the league six times, the last time in 1979.
