The 22nd annual 1000KM Hesper charity race is set to take place on Sunday, 9 July, and is inviting participants to "get their shirts wet for a good cause".

The event is organised by the committee of "Laftreff Hesper" in conjunction with the city of Hesperange, with all proceeds from the race going to Handicap International Luxembourg.

Participants of the race will be challenged to collectively cover a minimum of 1,000 kilometres, with a standing record of 8,850 kilometres to beat. The race will kick off at the Centre Nicolas Braun in Hesperange (Alzingen), with participants free to start at any time between 8am and 12pm.

The racecourse spans 2 kilometres, allowing participants the freedom to run as many laps as they desire. A minimum registration fee of €8 is required to partake in the race, payable to the Comité Laftreff Hesper either via bank transfer or on the race day.

The event will also feature awareness-raising activities manned by Handicap International (HI) members and volunteers, including an obstacle course which challenges participants to navigate with a prosthesis and a sight-impairing mask.

In addition to individual runners, company teams are also encouraged to join in the race as a team building exercise. "We've developed the concept of online fundraising to add a little extra spice to the race", said Anaïs Bourgois, Relationship Marketing Manager for Handicap International Luxembourg. "In this way, every athlete can get the support of their family, friends, and colleagues by setting themselves a solidarity target".

The 2022 race managed to attract hundreds of participants and successfully raised €6,500. The funds were used to support Handicap International Luxembourg's worldwide projects.
