All matches in the BGL national football division have been cancelled this weekend after a disagreement erupted concerning the use of mandatory rapid antigen tests for Covid-19.

The LFL had ruled that the national football division would not be subjected to mandatory rapid Covid testing, in contrast to other sports in the country. However, the municipality of Differdange has now implemented a new rule which will only permit matches to go ahead on its pitches provided both teams have undergone testing. The LFL has now announced the cancellation of this weekend's games as a result.

Both men's and women's football matches have been affected by the decision. The games will be postponed to a later date.

The FLF football federation said they hoped to meet with Minister of Sport Dan Kersch over the coming days to find a solution for the clubs involved in the disagreement.

The minister told RTL he was disappointed with the decision taken, and was considering making rapid testing mandatory in all sports, claiming he was "naïve" to believe there could be a voluntary solution to the issue. Unfortunately, amending the law would not be feasible until 21 February, explained Kersch, but beyond that date, things could be changed.

Kersch went on to praise the clubs in the basketball, handball and volleyball leagues, who have all implemented a testing rule. However, he said it was a disappointment that the football league, with its vast pool of finances, could not succeed where others had.

Differdange council rules "no football without tests"

On Friday morning, the municipal council of Differdange announced it would not make its grounds available for football matches unless all precautions were in place. The council said it was following advice given by the Ministry of Health and required rapid testing to be implemented in order for teams to make use of its pitches.

Progrès Niederkorn should have faced Mondorf at home this weekend, while FC Differdange would have played away to Strassen.
