Marseille announced on Tuesday that their coach Habib Beye had left the club following his failure to secure Champions League football for the Ligue 1 outfit.

"Olympique de Marseille announces the end of its collaboration with Habib Beye. The club thanks Habib Beye and wishes him all the best for the future," the 1993 European champions wrote in a brief statement on their website.

Beye, a former player and captain of the club, joined Marseille in mid-February following the departure of Roberto De Zerbi.

Tasked with qualifying for the Champions League, Beye could only lead Marseille to a fifth-placed finish in Ligue 1 and qualification for the second-tier Europa League.

The former Newcastle United defender won six matches, drew two and lost five during his tenure at the Stade Velodrome.

The announcement of Beye's replacement is expected in the coming days. According to several sources within the club, it is likely to be Bruno Genesio, who recently left Lille.

The managerial debate at Marseille had been put on ice earlier in June after the club were hit with sanctions by UEFA for failing to meet the European football governing body's break-even targets.
