Assauer lived away from the spotlight in his final years and was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
He played for the German football clubs Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen between 1964 and 1976, before moving on to becoming a manager for Schalke 04 and Werder Bremen.
