Nine projects are to receive financial backing from the Directorate of Defence.

Last July, a call for proposals was launched to finance research projects in the field of defence. The Directorate of Defence, the Ministry of the Economy and the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, working with the National Research Fund (FNR) and Luxinnovation, jointly issued the call, which targeted research and development projects in the defence sector.

Partnerships involving companies and national research centres went on to submit 30 projects in the hope of securing funding. Nine were ultimately selected. Among them, work is to begin on a secure platform that will allow military movements to be monitored live even in areas without network coverage. Another project focuses on a 3D mapping system to help the military navigate difficult environments. A further project aims to develop a system for protecting strategic satellites that operates entirely in space, removing the dependence on infrastructure on Earth.

According to a joint statement from the Directorate of Defence, the Ministry of the Economy and the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, the selected projects will contribute to the goal of strengthening the innovation capacity of Luxembourg's industry and research actors, in addition to making it easier for national players to plug into programmes and production chains at EU and NATO level.
