Poland says a missile that left a 10 metre crater in a field, roughly 80 kilometres from the border, was likely a Russian missile fired during Moscow's latest mass overnight attack on Ukraine, which killed at least eight people and wounded dozens more. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Poland wasn't the target, but confirmed two objects had violated Polish airspace. NATO said Polish jets and support aircrafts were scrambled in response, and that its Supreme Allied Commander had spoken directly with Poland's defence chief. European Council President Antonio Costa said the breach shows Russian aggression endangers the whole of Europe.
It's one of several incursions into NATO territory since Russia's war on Ukraine began in 2022, and comes as European leaders stress the security of the alliance's eastern flank. The incident adds pressure on NATO to reassure member states like Poland that its air defences can respond quickly to spillover from the war next door.

Figure of the day
Record-breaking heatwaves in May and June led to an estimated 2,877 excess deaths in England, the UK Health Security Agency said Wednesday.
- The provisional figure is almost double the total for the whole of the summer in 2025, which was 1,504, and represents "a substantial public health impact," the UKHSA government agency said.
- In May there were 753 extra deaths and in June, when there was a rare red heat warning, there were 2,124.
- The excess mortality figure is calculated by comparing average numbers of deaths on days when the temperature exceeds 20C with average numbers on cooler days.
