Diesel exceeds symbolic €2 mark in Luxembourg as motorists rush to pumps
The price of diesel in Luxembourg officially surpassed the symbolic threshold of €2 per litre today. Just before the latest record increase took effect, many motorists rushed to petrol stations across the country to fill up their tanks.
The sixth diesel price hike in 20 days represents a €7.50 increase for a 50-litre tank creating a noticeable difference for consumers. After diesel, heating oil and 95 petrol increased in price on Thursday night, 98 octane petrol will follow suit from midnight tonight. A litre of 98 petrol will rise by 4.4 cents to €1.874, the latest in a series of increases this week.
Energy minister Lex Delles says we cannot rule out medium-term shortages of diesel and kerosene in the wake of missile attacks on energy infrastructure in the Middle East. The Minister of Energy currently sees no problem for end consumers with gas and electricity, even though prices are rising on the world market.
