FATAL ACCIDENT – A fatal road accident took place yesterday afternoon. A minibus and a car collided on the N11 near Stafelter at around 3.40pm. Despite the efforts of emergency services, the 88-year-old driver of the car died at the scene.
TRAM EXTENSION – Round-the-clock construction between the Red Bridge and the Philharmonie continues until Friday, as work carries on for the new Kirchberg tram line. The project aims to connect key institutions, including the European Court of Justice, the EIB, and the European School to Luxembourg's tram network
SCOOTER SPEED – Police carrying out speed checks in Wormeldange on Sunday clocked a man on an e-scooter doing 61km/h on a cycle path. When officers tried to stop him, he attempted to flee, colliding with a police van and suffering minor injuries. A hospital check-up returned a positive drug test, he was fined, and his e-scooter confiscated.
CAR THEFTS – The public prosecutor's office says two suspects have been arrested over an international network accused of stealing luxury vehicles across Luxembourg. Nearly 20 high-end cars, mostly premium SUVs, have been taken in recent months, with losses running into several million euros.
EUROPE WILDFIRES – Wildfires continue to rage across France and Spain, with officials warning the worst is still to come. President Macron, visiting a crisis centre in Bordeaux, said the coming weeks will be tough. Spain's weather agency says a new heatwave from Wednesday will push fire risk to extreme levels nationwide, and Prime Minister Sanchez has urged citizens to take every precaution. The EU is sending more firefighting aircraft to Spain. More than 115,000 hectares have now burned in France this year alone.
TRUMP VISITS – President Trump is holding separate White House talks with Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky and Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu today, as both leaders are in Washington for the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham. The Zelensky meeting is expected to focus on the war with Russia and continued US support, while talks with Netanyahu will centre on Gaza, Iran, and regional security. It comes as Washington's truce with Iran holds, with both sides pausing strikes to allow diplomacy to continue. The White House says all military options remain on the table.
PERU PRESIDENT – Keiko Fujimori is sworn in as Peru's president today, after narrowly beating Roberto Sánchez in June's runoff. The inauguration falls on Peru's Independence Day, and draws foreign leaders, including Spain's King Felipe and Argentina's Javier Milei.
CARLY SIMON – American singer Carly Simon, known for hits like You're So Vain, has revealed that she has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. She said in a statement that she had "been learning how to live with Parkinson's disease" and that she had also been treated for skin cancer. Worldwide, about 10 million people have the illness, according to the Parkinson's Foundation.
FOOTBALL – French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo is expected to formally unveil Zinédine Zidane as the new France head coach, succeeding Didier Deschamps, at a press conference this morning.
BASKETBALL – LeBron James has signed a contract to play for the Philadelphia 76ers. James announced on Friday he would play for the Sixers on a two-year deal worth $8 million, ending a weeks-long mystery over the 41-year-old superstar's future. The managing owner Josh Harris said he was thrilled about chances for their first NBA title since 1983.
CLIMBING – Anton Fedorov has become the youngest Luxembourger ever to successfully climb Mont Blanc, reaching the 4,805m summit with his mother and their guide on Friday. He is 16 years old.
