US TARIFF THREATLuxembourg MPs from across the political spectrum agreed yesterday that Europe must not be intimidated by the United States following the threat of American tariffs on EU countries over the Greenland dispute. Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel said no option should be ruled out, while MPs called for a unified European response. Attention now turns to the World Economic Forum in Davos where European leaders, EU chief Ursula von der Leyen and French President Emmanuel Macron take to the stage today, ahead of President Trump’s speech on Wednesday.

AI COMPANY ICE – According to Canadian media reports, a Luxembourg-developed AI advanced social media listening programme is heading to US immigration authorities. Hootsuite, which acquired the Luxembourg-based AI firm Talkwalker in 2024, has signed a contract with the US Department of Homeland Security, giving it and, by extension ICE, access to its social media monitoring technology.

WOMEN PRISONERS – A new report warns that female inmates in Luxembourg remain marginalised despite years of promised reform. Ombudsman Claudine Konsbruck says the women’s block in Schrassig is outdated and overcrowded, with convicted prisoners, pre-trial detainees, and minors housed together. Parliament is voting on prison reform legislation on Thursday.

World

SPAIN TRAIN CRASH – Spain begins three days of national mourning today for the 40 people killed in a high-speed train crash that the prime minister has vowed to investigate. The death toll could rise as rescue operations are ongoing. Over 120 people were injured with 41 still in hospital.

TRUMP ANNIVERSARY – Protests and walkouts are expected across the US, marking one year since President Trump was inaugurated as the 47th president, including National Women’s March events in Washington, DC and New York. A televised interview with President Trump is expected to air on NewsNation later in the day.

VALENTINO RIP – Italian designer Valentino Garavani, whose luxurious dresses adorned some of the world’s most elegant women from Jackie Kennedy to Audrey Hepburn, has died aged 93. According to the Italian news agency ANSA the giant of haute couture died at his home. A funeral is planned for Friday.

CLIMATE CHANGE – Penguins in Antarctica are breeding significantly earlier than expected, with scientists linking the rapid shift to rising temperatures caused by climate change. A decade-long study found the changes closely correlated with warming and reduced sea ice, which has altered food availability and nesting conditions. Researchers said they were struck by both the speed and scale of the change, which exceeded previous expectations.

TENNIS – At the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic cruised to his 100th Melbourne victory in straight sets as he chases a record 25th Grand Slam. Top seeds Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff also both won but struggled early on.

TENNIS – Casper Ruud has announced he is ready to drop everything and dash to be by the side of his wife should she go into labour during the Norwegian’s involvement in the Australian Open.

FOOTBALL Senegal has celebrated a national holiday as the Africa Cup of Nations champions returned home. Pape Gueye’s extra-time winner gave Senegal a 1-0 victory over Morocco in Sunday’s chaotic final. A parade through the capital and reception at the presidential palace takes place today.

Early risers may be greeted by a touch of freezing fog this morning, but once the fog lifts, the day settles into a cloudy and grey theme. The good news is that it will remain dry throughout, and temperatures start at -3°C to 0°C in the morning, warming up to a maximum of 4°C in the afternoon.
