Psychedelic mould breakers Kula Shaker have just announced a show in at den Atelier in Luxembourg on Friday, 26 February.
Named after a 9th century Indian saint, the British quartet had a string of hits in the second half of the 1990s – notably, tunes like Tattva, Hey Dude, and Govinda which all appeared on their debut album, K (1996).
But even though Kula Shaker tapped into classic psych-rock sounds on their first two LPs (K and Peasants, Pigs & Astronauts), astute listeners can also parse certain Britpop frequencies in there, too.
Besides the obvious influence of The Grateful Dead, Kula Shaker fit neatly into the sonic landscape of 90s Britain, up there with the likes of Blur, Oasis, Pulp, and Suede.
And even though Kula Shaker formally broke up in 1999 following the release of their second album, frontman Crispian Mills continued to tour as a solo artist. Accompanied by a session band, he notably opened for Robbie Williams before joining the psychedelic rock band The Jeevas in 2002.
But Kula Shaker was never always in the back of his mind until he refounded the outfit and the band released their third LP, Strangefolk, in 2007.
Produced with an all-star, Grammy-studded team which included Tchad Blake, Sam Williams, and Chris Sheldon, it marked a comeback for Kula Shaker, and was marked by its Doors-y riffs and classic sound.
The band have since released albums at regular intervals – and have seemingly increased their output in the 2020s with full LPs out in 2022, 2024, and their latest, Wormslayer, in 2026.
Released on 30 January, Wormslayer boasts killer riffs, catchy hooks, and their signature sensitivity, railing against greed and materialism in an age where those traits might be considered virtues.
Those that might like to see them live at den Atelier on Friday, 26 February are thus in for a healthy, heady mix of old and new. Kula Shaker will most certainly be playing their latest record, which will be just over a year at the time of their show.
But long-time fans can also expect some of their classics – that sumptuous mix of 90s Britpop, late 60s psychedelia, and mental guitar riffs.
Tickets to their show go on sale on Friday, 16 October at 11am.
