There's a certain rhythm you settle into when at OOTC: watch a great band, take a break outside, have a veggie foodtruck treat, step back inside, have your mind blown, rinse, repeat.

Magically, the weather has always been perfect whenever the Out Of The Crowd Festival (OOTC) – held every April at the Kulturfabrik in Esch-sur-Alzette – comes around, with this year being no exception.

A highlight on the Luxembourgish cultural calendar for those who prefer their music a little more indie and experimental, it's also a prime time and place to eat tasty food truck food, peruse vinyl and vintage booths, and get that first sunburn of the year.

For those in the market for sonic experimentation and sun burn

Luxembourgers can already count themselves quite lucky in terms of musical offerings in the Grand Duchy. Year-round highlights at Rockhal and Atelier; Rotondes's supply of indie acts; and Out Of The Crowd for the real underground stuff.

OOTC's lineup traditionally includes more underground outfits– from indie rock to psychedelia to full-blown noise acts.

This year was no different, featuring acts like the dreamy jangle outfit Ulrika Spacek, analogue psychonauts Meule, or the explosively cathartic A Place To Bury Strangers. To bolser this already strong lineup, OOTC also hosted the experimental noise duo HYPER GAL from Osaka, Japan, as well as two Luxembourgish acts: Sunny Gloom and Fulvous.

With this being the OOTC's 22nd edition, the organisers have managed to nail that festival-y, alternative atmosphere. Ample food trucks, the background hum of excellent bands in Kulturfabrik's courtyard, and the consistently great weather really make OOTC the starting point of the Grand Duchy's musical summer catalogue.

A lineup for connoisseurs and the musically adventurous

OOTC 2026 kicked off with two outfits from the Grand Duchy: Fulvous – a shoegaze quartet who just released their debut LP, Burning Flower – and Sunny Gloom, the solo project of TUYS member Yann Gengler.

Fulvous set the tone with melodic riffs, dreamy vocals, and crashing crescendos, whilst Sunny Gloom went for a darker (and, well, altogether gloomier) sound that nevertheless let glimpses of light shine through. OOTC always take care to exhibit Luxembourgish talent, with this year's showings matching the rest of the lineup nicely in quality and atmosphere.

The riveting heaviness continued with Kowloon Walled City, whose wall-of-sound approach made for a particularly impressive live experience – and reminded us that OOTC is one of the very few events in Luxembourg where you might see these kinds of acts live and back-to-back.

HYPER GAL where arguably this edition's dark horse candidates. The fairly prolific Japanese noise duo quickly convinced the crowd that they were ones to keep an eye on, blending noisy electro-loops with sugary sweet pop undercurrents – hyper pop propelled to its ultimate sonic conclusions.

Following three heavy opening acts, Ulrika Spacek took the crowd by surprise with their warmer, fuzzier, janglier indie sound. Catchy choruses and afternoon sun really captured the audience with multiple tracks from their newest LP, EXPO.

For the third time in three years, hardcore (post-)punk trio DITZ absolutely crushed on a Luxembourgish stage. "Usually the crowd are a bit harder to get moving," drummer Samuel Evans told RTL Today Radio after the show, "but tonight specifically was amazing."

L.A. Witch delivered Gothic vocals over a familiar, but distorted surf rock sound. In doing so, the Los Angeles trio perhaps best captured the overall musical atmosphere of the festival: rock music, but twisted into new and captivating forms, and delivered by fantastic live performers.

One of Luxembourg's most rhythmic events

As the evening rolled on with the fantastically creative art collective Crack Cloud, the new-wave-y dance punk duo GANS, and the explosive A Place To Bury Strangers, the crowd at Out Of The Crowd settled into a very comfortable - and very fun - rhythm.

Watch a great band, take a break outside, have a veggie food truck treat, chat about the upcoming group. Step back inside, have your mind blown, rinse, repeat.

By the time Meule took to the stage shortly after midnight, the energy was still high. Equipped with two drum kits, one electric guitar, and a massive analogue synth that looks like a last-century switchboard, Out Of The Crowd had certainly fulfilled its mission statement.

You really won't see these kinds of acts anywhere else in Luxembourg – and to have so many alternative, experimental, and interesting acts back to back is a boon for audiences of all types.

Out Of The Crowd certainly succeeded in introducing and showcasing a wide variety of groups to local audiences, and once again crafted a fun, rhythmic, captivating atmosphere that's all sun, music, and extraordinary live performances.
