A painful love

Steve Castile, 28, is currently completing a master’s degree in media culture research at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau. Music has long been his passion and remains at the heart of his life.

His musical journey began with an app on his iPod Touch, where he could play the piano on the small screen. Over time, he added real instruments, including the guitar and keyboard.

For years, however, Steve didn’t sing, believing he couldn’t. Gradually, as he found his voice, his own songs began to emerge.

To build their endurance on stage, the candidates were advised by the coaches during the workshop to sing their songs while running. Steve, who has already completed five marathons, tried to follow their advice. “It was a catastrophe”, he admitted, joking that people looked at him strangely, especially given that his song requires more vocal power than something more softly sung. Nevertheless, he makes an effort to apply the guidance he is given.

Steve’s song explores an obsessive but painful love experience, written during the Rocklab Songwriting Camp.

A natural choice

Eva Marija, the youngest of the candidates at 20, is entering the contest with her song Mother Nature. She is currently in her final year of a bachelor’s degree in songwriting in London and regularly performs in cafés both in England and Luxembourg.

Eva has Slovenian roots but grew up and attended school in Luxembourg. She often makes music with her family, singing together as a small choir. Each family member also plays at least one instrument, and for Eva, it was clear from a young age that she wanted to pursue music.

Her passion was sparked at the age of three when she watched the Eurovision Song Contest with her family and saw Alexander Rybak perform. That was when Eva decided she wanted to learn the violin.

Her goal is to make music professionally. She explains that performing is what she loves most. She hopes to continue developing her own project and dedicate time to writing her own albums. “I love being on stage so much, maybe I could go on tour. I really enjoy writing songs, both for myself and for others”, she says.

Eva is also considering a future as a music tutor or as a violinist supporting other musicians, whether in recordings or live performances.
