OVERSHOOT DAY – Luxembourg has reached its Ecological Overshoot Day today, meaning the nation has already consumed all the natural resources that should last the entire year. The country ranks second globally, behind only Qatar. However, Sweden, Denmark and Switzerland have improved their standings through renewable energy and local production. Climate platform Votum Klima notes Luxembourg’s poor ranking is partly due to fuel tourism.

BUS FIRE – Emergency services responded to a bus fire in Bissen yesterday evening. No injuries were reported in the incident.

BODY FIND – The body of a 70-year-old Portuguese man has been discovered near a supermarket in Mont St Martin, France, close to the Luxembourg border. He has been missing since December. An investigation into his death has been launched.

World

AUSTRALIA STABBING – One person has been killed and at least two critically injured in a knife attack in Sydney. Police have arrested a suspect who was known to authorities.

UKRAINE PEACE TALKS Peace negotiations over the Ukraine conflict continue in Geneva today, with US mediation. Meanwhile Ukrainian forces claim their largest territorial gains in nearly three years.

IRAN US TALKS The United States is also holding nuclear talks with Iran in Geneva, with Oman mediating. Washington aims to prevent Tehran from developing atomic weapons.

EUROPE CLIMATE – Europe’s scientific advisory board is warning the EU remains poorly prepared for climate change, despite being the fastest-warming continent. Infrastructure damage already exceeds 45 billion euros annually.

CHINESE NEW YEAR – Chinese communities worldwide are welcoming the Year of the Horse with dragon dances, firecrackers and parades. Celebrations are taking place from Beijing’s Lama Temple to Hong Kong’s float parade in Tsim Sha Tsui, and in New York’s Chinatown.

RAMADAN START – The Muslim holy month of Ramadan has begun, with believers worldwide fasting from dawn to sunset. Commemorating the Prophet Muhammad’s reception of the Qur’an, the month-long observance is expected to conclude on the evening of the March 18.

CARNIVAL CELEBRATIONS – Carnival celebrations are reaching their peak across Europe and the Americas today. New Orleans hosts its famous Mardi Gras parades, while Rio de Janeiro’s Sambadrome lights up with samba. For the Brits, it’s all pancakes as it’s Shrove Tuesday. Tomorrow marks Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent.

Sport

OLYMPICS – Norway continues to dominate the Winter Olympics medal table with 28 medals, including 12 golds. There are 6 medal events today – including Nordic combined, snowboard slopestyle, biathlon relay and speed skating.

FOOTBALL – The Champions League playoffs kick off this evening. Luxembourg international Leandro Barreiro and Benfica face Real Madrid in tonight’s standout fixture. Other matches include Monaco vs Paris St Germain, Dortmund plays Bergamo and Galatasaray Istanbul face Juventus.

Weather

Northern parts of Luxembourg can expect more snowfall throughout the day, especially in the afternoon. Other parts of the country will have a dry morning, followed by rain or sleet in the afternoon and the wind could pick up towards the end of the day as well. Temperatures will hover between 0-3°C in the morning, warming up to a maximum of 5°C in the afternoon.
