
VENEZUELA EARTHQUAKES – Seven Luxembourg specialists are helping coordinate the rescue and relief operation in Venezuela, nearly a week after the earthquakes struck. Three CGDIS members are working with the EU's Civil Protection Mechanism in La Guaira, the worst affected area, where officials say the focus is now shifting from search and rescue to caring for the injured and the survivors. The death toll from last week's twin earthquakes has risen to more than 1,700, with tens of thousands still unaccounted for.
LUXEMBOURG MILLIONAIRES – A UBS report has found global wealth surged in 2025, adding nearly one million new millionaires. Luxembourg has around 85,000 millionaires – about 12% of its population. Among adults, nearly one in six are millionaires, the highest global proportion.
GRAND DUKE FRANCE – Grand Duke Guillaume and Grand Duchess Stéphanie are on a visit to Paris today, where they will be officially received by French President Emmanuel Macron. They are accompanied by Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel. It is the sixth such visit since the change of reign, following Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, the Vatican, and Spain.
FUEL PRICES – The prices of diesel, SP95, and SP98 petrol have come down today, although heating fuel is moving in the other direction. SP95 petrol is now 1.9 cents cheaper per litre, dropping to €1.63. SP98 petrol and diesel have fallen by 3.1 cents per litre to €1.78 and €1.59, respectively. Heating oil, by contrast is up to €1.07.
IRAN US TALKS – US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are in Qatar for indirect talks to preserve the fragile ceasefire and restore safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran continues to deny any direct negotiations are taking place.
US CITIZENSHIP – The US Supreme Court has ruled that President Trump's order limiting birthright citizenship is unconstitutional. The 6-3 decision upholds the 14th Amendment guarantee of automatic citizenship for almost everyone born on American soil.
EUROPE / US HEATWAVE – The heatwave has shifted east, with red warnings in Hungary, Poland, Romania and the Balkans. Temperatures could top 40°C in Budapest today. A dangerous heat dome is expanding across the central and eastern US ahead of 4 July. More than 140 million people are under heat alerts.
EU PRESIDENCY – Ireland has taken over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union from Cyprus. European Council President António Costa joined Taoiseach Micheál Martin for the opening ceremony at Dublin Castle.
OCEAN TEMPERATURES – The oceans have never been this warm in June, according to the EU's Copernicus climate agency. Average temperatures reached almost 21°C, a record with knock-on effects for weather, climate and marine ecosystems.
FOOTBALL – In last night's World Cup games, Norway has eliminated Ivory Coast 2-1 and France beat Sweden 3-0. Mexico is also through to the round of 16 after beating Ecuador 2-0 this morning.
Tonight sees England face DR Congo at 6pm and Belgium against Senegal at 10pm.
BASKETBALL – LeBron James is leaving the Los Angeles Lakers after eight seasons but will continue his NBA career elsewhere. The 41 year old, the league's all time leading scorer, informed the franchise on the opening day of free agency. His agent, Rich Paul, says a new team has yet to be decided, with the Cavaliers, Heat and Warriors among those linked.
TENNIS – Two tennis legends are out in the first round at Wimbledon. Serena Williams' comeback in the singles ended in a straight defeat, losing in three sets to Australia's Maya Joint. Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka lost in four sets to Italy's Matteo Berrettini.
The morning will start off at around 16–18°C, with the sun and clouds alternating in the sky. The clouds may take the upper hand in the afternoon as showers can be expected across the nation, while temperatures will reach a maximum of 26°C.
