FIRES & ACCIDENTS – A field fire broke out in Boxhorn, in the municipality of Wincrange, yesterday afternoon. About three hectares burned before firefighters brought it under control, with the police helicopter called in to assess the blaze from the air. The fire was declared extinguished by around 7pm.
Rescue crews were busy overnight: a driver was injured after hitting a wall in Harlange, two people were hurt in a collision on the Dudelange motorway at Bettembourg, and fires broke out in Luxembourg City, Esch-sur-Alzette, and Oberpallen, all causing only material damage.
JUSTICE MINISTER BABY – The Ministry of Justice has announced that Justice Minister Elisabeth Margue has become the mother of a healthy baby boy. Both the minister and her newborn child are doing well.
PETROL PRICE – As of today, SP98 will cost €1.90/litre, an increase of 5.4 cents. It is thereby rapidly approaching the price of diesel, which is currently €1.904/ litre.
EUROPE HEATWAVE – A new heatwave is scorching Europe, with more than 135 million people facing temperatures above 35°C. Britain has recorded its fifth-hottest day ever, while parts of France topped 42°C. Hospitals are under strain, and wildfires have broken out in Greece and central England.
Several large wildfires are burning in Germany. In North Rhine-Westphalia's Düren district, 25 hectares are ablaze, forcing part of a village to be evacuated as the flames spread. In Saarland, ten hectares of forest are burning near Ottweiler, where four firefighters have been injured. More fires have also been reported in the Bernkastel-Wittlich district and in the Harz.
AFGHANISTAN TALIBAN – Tomorrow marks five years since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan, and the UN says women and girls there face the world's most severe rights crisis. More than 100 decrees have curbed education, work and movement, leaving 2.4 million girls out of secondary school. UNESCO is calling for their right to education to be fully restored.
IRAN WAR – US Vice President JD Vance says keeping oil and gas prices low for Americans is now Washington's top priority in the Iran conflict, ahead of stopping Iran getting nuclear weapons. It's a shift from the administration's earlier line, and comes as just 37% of Americans still back the war.
President Trump has announced tariffs of up to 100% on imported drones, citing national security and insufficient US production. European drones face a 15% rate, while larger, more security-sensitive models face the full 100%.
WEST BANK VIOLENCE – Israeli forces have moved against settlers besieging Palestinian homes near Nablus, dismantling two outposts after unusually sharp US criticism. It comes as Israel reopened a separate West Bank settlement, dismantled two decades ago, in a move welcomed by hardline ministers.
CRICKET – The Luxembourg men’s cricket team are competing in the World Cup Qualifers in Helsinki. Led by captain Shiv Gill, Luxembourg will face Bulgaria, the Isle of Man, Spain, and the hosts Finland. Now that cricket is an Olympic sport, there is all to play for!
SWIMMING– Rémi Fabiani's Luxembourg swim record run ends in the semi-finals. He set a new national mark of 24.73 seconds in the 50 metres backstroke heats, but finished last in his semi-final in 24.96, missing out on a place in the final.
TENNIS – Former world number one Iga Swiatek has captured her first title of the year, roaring past Elena Rybakina 6-2, 6-3 to win the WTA 1000 in Toronto.
Meanwhile, in the men’s Ben Shelton has backed up an ATP title for the first time in his career, defeating Brandon Nakashima 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) to win a second consecutive Masters 1000 trophy in Canada.
