Introspective art-pop and woodwind instruments are the name of the game at Rotondes on Wednesday, 12 August.

Before embarking on a solo career, the musician Alice Costelloe had already made a name for herself in the indie sphere. Formerly of the shoegaze duo Big Deal (which toured with Depeche Mode in 2014) and Britpop-coded pop-rock outfit Superfood, she's now released her first solo album.

Her sound – lofi, introspective, but catchy at every turn – captures a certain post-indie sensibility, an evolution from rock sounds to a more delicate, refined approach.

Her lyricism, meanwhile, grapples with difficult and emotional topics relating to relationships and family – perhaps fitting topics for the great-great-granddaughter of Sigmund Freud.

Following band life, Costelloe re-emerged onto the scene in late 2023 with her first solo EP, So Neurotic, followed by the When It's The Time EP in 2024.

Markedly, these solo ventures show off a decisive shift in her sound – away from grungy, shoegaze-y indie sounds and towards softer sonic textures that feature woodwind instruments and soaring synths.

This much is certainly true of her debut LP, Move On With The Year. Released on 6 February, 2026, it's a remarkably warm record to listen to even when it grapples with themes of absent parents and lingering traumas.

Indeed, the slightly ironic whimsy which marks the record gives it a particular and unique feel: self-consciously bittersweet, meta-melancholic.

As Rotondes (very accurately) advertise on their page, Costelloe's show at Rotondes on Wednesday, 12 August should be a no-brainer for fans of Mitski, Julia Jacklin, and Lael Neal. Expect a really cosy (and cosily real) atmosphere with Alice Costelloe.
