THIRD HOMEJACKING SUSPECT FOUND – One of the suspects of a 2025 Luxembourg homejacking, wanted on an international arrest warrant, was recently arrested. As first reported by the Luxemburger Wort on Monday, 28-year-old French national Chiranne Y. has been detained on the Thai island of Phuket. The public prosecutor's office confirmed the information to RTL. In January, two men were arrested in Paris on the same international arrest warrant and extradited to Luxembourg.

This relates to an incident which took place on 27 October 2025, when three men dressed as delivery couriers pretended to be dropping off flowers at the property. They threatened a Luxembourg couple from Eschweiler with a firearm and a knife and demanded €300,000. In the end, they made off with €9,000, a watch, and credit cards.

FINANCE SECTOR TAX INCREASES – Tax revenue from the banking, investment fund, and insurance sectors now amounts to more than three quarters of total corporate income tax receipts, up from 70% the year before. According to Finance Minister Gilles Roth's answer to a parliamentary question from the Greens MP Sam Tanson, roughly €2.97 billion of total revenue, out of some €3.84 billion, came from the financial centre last year. Revenue from the financial centre climbed by 18.6% between 2023 and 2024, the minister said, before rising by a further 33.3% the following year.

PRODUCT RECALL – Delhaize has announced that it is recalling Crottin de Chavignol (60g) from the Triballat Rian brand, due to the possible presence of coliform bacteria. The product was on sale between 9 June and 3 July. customers are invited to return the cheese to the store, where they will be given a refund.

CHINA TESTS MISSILE – The United States voiced alarm Monday over Beijing's nuclear program after China test-fired a purported long-range missile into the Pacific Ocean, the latest move in its rapid military modernisation. Monday's test came two years after China fired an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) into the waters near French Polynesia, in what had been the first launch of such a missile over international waters in more than 40 years.

Analysts said that the test demonstrated growing Chinese capacity to strike the mainland of the United States, which sees the Asian power as its top adversary despite a reconciliation drive under President Donald Trump.

SAMSUNG PROFIT INCREASE – South Korean technology giant Samsung Electronics forecast Tuesday a massive 19-fold jump in second-quarter operating profit from a year earlier, buoyed by sustained AI-driven demand for memory chips. The world's largest memory chipmaker estimated April–June operating profit at 89.4 trillion won ($58.4 billion) – up 1,810 percent on-year, a company statement said.

Frenzied global demand for advanced memory chips used in data centres for artificial intelligence has already helped South Korean semiconductor giants post record profits this year. The boom has also strengthened workers' demands for higher pay, and Samsung avoided a major strike in May after reaching an agreement on bonuses.

LE PEN RULING TODAY – France's far-right chief Marine Le Pen is bracing for a key verdict on Tuesday that will determine if she can run in next year's presidential elections, when her party has its best chance yet of winning power.

A lower court last year sentenced Le Pen, 57, to a five-year ban from public office and two years in prison over a fake jobs scam at the European Parliament. If the appeals court upholds that ruling, it will be a devastating blow to the three-time presidential candidate's hopes to replace outgoing centrist President Emmanuel Macron. The decision, expected to be read out from 1.30 pm (11.30 GMT), could also find her guilty but include a shorter ban from public office and some form of house arrest.

BELGIUM SMASH USA Belgium dumped the United States out of their own World Cup Monday, as Charles De Ketelaere's brace secured a 4-1 win that was eclipsed by the bitter row over Folarin Balogun's ban. Victory means the Belgians face Spain in the quarter-finals, while the US follow co-hosts Canada and Mexico out of the tournament with elimination in the round of 16 after a thoroughly flat performance.

PORTUGAL OUT OF WC Cristiano Ronaldo laboured through his last World Cup match Monday as the dream of winning the biggest prize of all ended in a 1-0 defeat to Spain and left him fighting back tears. The 41-year-old Portugal captain and one of the best players of all time says he will now go away and think about what comes next. He has won it all in a trophy-laden career at some of Europe's biggest clubs, and tasted European glory with his country. But among his bulging trophy cabinet there will be no World Cup winners medal, and he was largely ineffectual as he huffed and puffed through a disappointing last-16 clash in Texas.

DEROZAN DROPPED – Six-time NBA All-Star forward DeMar DeRozan, a 17-season veteran, was waived by the Sacramento Kings on Monday after two campaigns with the club. "Thank you for every bucket, every big moment, and every time you represented Sacramento. Wishing you all the best in your next chapter," the Kings posted on X in announcing the move. DeRozan has averaged 21.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.0 blocked shots in 1,264 games with the Toronto Raptors, San Antonio Spurs, Chicago Bulls and the Kings. The 36-year-old American, who helped the United States to Olympic gold at Rio in 2016 and the 2014 Basketball World Cup crown, averaged 18.4 points, 4.1 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.0 blocked shots a game last season.
