The tallies, using data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO), probably reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections.

Many countries are testing only symptomatic or the most serious cases.

On Wednesday, 6,979 new deaths and 479,389 new cases were recorded worldwide.

Based on latest reports, the countries with the most new deaths were United States with 1,000 new deaths, followed by India with 517 and Brazil with 510.

The United States is the worst-affected country with 227,701 deaths from 8,859,300 cases. At least 3,518,140 people have been declared recovered.

After the US, the hardest-hit countries are Brazil with 158,456 deaths from 5,468,270 cases, India with 120,527 deaths from 8,040,203 cases, Mexico with 90,309 deaths from 906,863 cases, and the United Kingdom with 45,675 deaths from 942,275 cases.

The country with the highest number of deaths compared to its population is Peru with 104 fatalities per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Belgium with 96, Spain 76, Brazil 75.

China -- excluding Hong Kong and Macau -- has to date declared 85,915 cases, including 4,634 deaths and 80,943 recoveries.

Latin America and the Caribbean overall has 397,054 deaths from 11,127,158 cases, Europe 270,927 deaths from 9,672,097 infections, and the United States and Canada 237,733 deaths from 9,084,886 cases.

Asia has reported 168,592 deaths from 10,387,612 cases, the Middle East 58,516 deaths from 2,504,992 cases, Africa 42,149 deaths from 1,750,186 cases, and Oceania 1,021 deaths from 34,332 cases.

As a result of corrections by national authorities or late publication of data, the figures updated over the past 24 hours may not correspond exactly to the previous day’s tallies.
