Locals reported the discovery to the authorities who quickly realised that the bomb was heavily corroded and inactive. It did not pose a danger to the public.

Nevertheless the de-mining service from Metz was called who dug out the device and took it to a secure site to neutralise it.

According to Républicain Lorrain, the bomb was American-made. During World War Two American troops were stationed in the surroundings of the football stadium where the bomb was found.

The local mayor said that numerous such bombs were found 30 years ago and that the area may still hold a few more.

If another one is found, it is imperative to alert the authorities immediately and stay well clear of it. Other bombs might not be inactive like the one that was unearthed this week.
