
POLITMONITOR SURVEY - Housing remains the main concern of people in Luxembourg, according to a new Politmonitor survey, which contacted over 1000 people in Luxembourg. Three quarters of respondents said that they are still mostly concerned over access to affordable homes, followed by rising energy prices and inflation. Over half of the group said they were worried about the increase in traffic, and the consequences of climate change.
SHOOTING VERDICT - We can expect the verdict in the trial of a former policeman, who shot a motorist while on duty four years ago. The prosecution has argued that the shooting, which happened in Bonnevoie during a police control, was a targeted execution and has demanded a 30-year prison sentence. The defence has pleaded it was an act of legitimate defence and demanded an acquittal.
THIRD GENDER OPTION - The draft bill for the introduction of a third gender option on a person’s civil status will be submitted to the Chamber of Deputies in the first quarter of 2023. In its coalition agreement, the government announced the introduction of an alternative to the binary gender options ‘male’ and ‘female’ on the civil status. The change is meant to account for intersex people, who do not fall under either category as well as non-binary individuals
SHOOTING VIRGINIA - A gunman has shot and killed multiple people in a Walmart store late last night in the US state of Virginia. Police said in a brief news conference that the shooter was among the dead but they did not say exactly how many people were fatally shot, but believe it is “less than 10.”
TURKEY EARTHQUAKE - A magnitude-6.1 earthquake has struck northwest Turkey in the early hours this morning, injuring at least 35 people. The shallow tremor struck about 170 kilometres east of Istanbul, in the Golyaka district of the country. Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, who visited Golyaka, said one person was seriously hurt after jumping from a balcony out of panic. He said 70 aftershocks had been recorded.
GERMANY ACCIDENT - Early on Tuesday evening, an 84-year-old SUV driver caused an accident on Düsseldorf’s Königsallee shopping mile, close to the city’s Christmas market. Six people were injured, two seriously. The police assume it was an accident and not an attack. According to police, the driver lost control of his car and drove into parked e-scooters.
WORLD CUP - Following yesterday’s shock result of Saudi Arabia beating Argentina 2:1, there are 4 matches today. Morocco meets Croatia at 11, Germany will play Japan at 2. At 5 it’s Spain v Costa Rica and tonight at 8, Belgium will face Canada.
