Minister of Justice Sam Tanson confirmed this information in her response to a parliamentary question by MP Dan Biancalana from the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP). In its coalition agreement, the government announced the introduction of an alternative to the binary gender options ‘male’ and ‘female’ on the civil status.
The change is meant to account for intersex people, who do not fall under either category due to their anatomy, but also non-binary individuals, who were assigned male or female at birth but do not identify with either.
In his parliamentary question, Biancalana also wanted to know how Luxembourg will implement the change. In Belgium, there are plans to remove the category of’sex’ on the civil status, whilst Germany added a third category called ‘Divers.’ Tanson responded that this has yet to be determined in Luxembourg due to a number of outstanding questions.
