A man identified by Australian media as Ahmed al Ahmed, 43, reportedly disarmed one of the gunmen during a shooting described as a terrorist attack on Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday, as authorities said 15 people were killed and many others injured.
Video circulating on social media shows a man in a white t-shirt approaching a shooter from behind while taking cover near a car, then grabbing the rifle during a struggle and pointing it back at the attacker. He does not fire, and the attacker retreats towards another armed person who is shooting further along the beach, according to the footage.
Shots are later heard and seen directed towards the man in white and another person, with both taking cover behind a tree.
7News said the man was Ahmed al Ahmed, a fruit seller, and reported he was shot twice. The outlet quoted a man named Mustapha, who said he is al Ahmed’s cousin and that he was in hospital.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese publicly praised al Ahmed and others as “heroes”, as online commenters called for him to be honoured for his actions.
