
CAR ACCIDENT – A serious traffic accident has occurred early this morning, just before 5am, on the N24 between Noerdange and Huttange. According to initial reports, a driver lost control and crashed head-on into a tree. Emergency services and firefighters from Beckerich and Redange are on the scene and the road is closed.
DRUG BUST – Authorities are investigating one of Luxembourg’s largest drug busts after police seized a road crusher concealing hundreds of kilos of cocaine, with two suspects now in custody at the Uerschterhaff penitentiary centre. The machine, which had arrived from Colombia, concealed cocaine with an estimated market value of between €80 million and €120 million.
CARITAS SCANDAL – The special commission put together to understand what happened in the Caritas embezzlement scandal has yet to find any concrete answers. Speaking to RTL, the chairman of the parliamentary committee, CSV MP Charel Weiler said its role is not to assign responsibility but to prevent such incidents from happening again. The fraud scandal at Caritas involved the embezzlement of €61 million.
PETRUSSE PROJECT – The second phase of the Pétrusse valley renaturation project in Luxembourg City is set to begin later this month. Following the excavation of the Grund canal up to the Pont Adolphe Bridge, the next stage will extend the restoration to Rue d’Anvers near the Gare district and Hollerich, returning the waterway to a more natural state.
GAZA CEASEFIRE – US President Donald Trump has warned that “all hell” will break loose if every Israeli hostage is not released from Gaza within days. Hamas has threatened to postpone further exchanges under a fragile ceasefire deal, it says Israel is violating. Tensions have been running high since a shock proposal by Trump to take over the Gaza Strip and remove its more than two million inhabitants.
OPEN AI – Elon Musk is leading an investment group offering over $97billion for the leading artificial intelligence company, OpenAI. The offer is the latest twist in a longstanding battle between Musk and Open AI chief Sam Altman who responded to the bid by offering to buy Musk’s social media platform X for $10billion.
HEGSETH IN EUROPE - Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth is visiting the headquarters of two US military commands in Germany today, before heading to Brussels for a meeting of NATO defence ministers and a gathering of Ukraine’s international supporters in Belgium. According to the Pentagon, Hegseth will discuss the need to boost allied defence spending while he is also expected to reiterate Trump’s commitment for an end to the war. Meanwhile Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet US Vice President JD Vance on Friday at the Munich Security Conference.
YOUTUBE 20 – YouTube has evolved from a dinner party lark 20 years ago into a modern lifestyle staple poised to overtake US cable television in paid viewership. PayPal colleagues Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim conceived YouTube in 2005. Video uploading capabilities were added a couple of months later, when Karim posted the first video, titled Me at the Zoo. YouTube reached more than 2.5 billion viewers globally last year.
FOOTBALL – The Champions League is resuming tonight. Manchester City is playing against Real Madrid, Sporting Lisbon take on Borussia Dortmund, Brest against PSG and Juventus are facing Eindhoven.
Cristiano Ronaldo has agreed to extend his contract with Al Nassr until June 2026, keeping the Portuguese star in Saudi Arabia. Ronaldo turned 40 last week. According to the Saudi club, an announcement will be made over the coming days.
SKIING – Mikaela Shiffrin has said she will not defend her giant slalom title at the World Ski Championships, but the US star will race with newly-crowned downhill champion Breezy Johnson in the women’s team combined later today. Shiffrin is making her comeback from an injury in Killington in November that left her with an abdominal puncture wound.
