One of the four engines of the Boeing 747 caught fire, resulting in hot metal parts from the turbines to fall to the ground, a spokesperson for the airport told national broadcaster NOS.

One elderly woman was treated with light head injuries, while a young child suffered light burns after touching a hot piece of metal. Metal had pierced car and home roofs in the village of Meerssen.

This is the second incident in one weekend. A United Airlines plane suffered a fiery engine failure Saturday shortly after taking off from Denver for Hawaii, dropping massive debris on a residential area.

The plane circled for a short while on three engines before landing at nearby Liege airport.
