
CARITAS SCANDAL – A special parliamentary committee focused on the Caritas scandal, met for the first time on Wednesday. The committee’s primary objective is not to conduct a second investigation into the Caritas scandal but to gain a better understanding of the events to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
BREAST CANCER – A recent analysis reveals that the average age of breast cancer diagnoses in Luxembourg has dropped, with increasing numbers of young women affected. The National Cancer Registry (RNC) reported in its 2019 fact sheet that more than 21% of new breast cancer patients were under the age of 50.
FOREST ACCIDENT – In the wake of a tragic accident in Lellig that resulted in a hiker’s death, the Nature and Forest Agency (ANF) has issued a reminder about the inherent dangers of forest environments. The ANF also highlighted that the particularly wet conditions of summer and autumn this year have strained trees, impacting their stability. As a result, hikers are advised to exercise extra caution in and around forests after heavy rainfall, storms, prolonged dry spells, or freezing rain.
CITY BRIDGE – Costs for a planned cycle and pedestrian bridge in Luxembourg City have surged by €16 million since 2021, but the city council remains committed to moving the project forward despite local opposition. The Luxembourg City Council approved the initial cost estimate for the bridge connecting the Neudorf-Weimershof and Cents neighbourhoods back in 2021.
DOCTORS’ PAYMENTS – Launched late in 2023, Luxembourg’s third-party payment system is gradually being rolled out in GP surgeries. The system seeks to eradicate advance payments for healthcare costs. The Ministry of Health confirmed that 491 healthcare professionals had switched to the new system as of September.
TURKEY ATTACKS – Turkey says its military has struck sites in Iraq and Syria linked to Kurdish separatists, in response to an attack on the Turkish Aerospace Industries headquarters in Ankara yesterday. Turkey blames the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, the PKK. Five people died in the attack and 22 were wounded.
LEBANON CONFERENCE – French President Emmanuel Macron is opening a conference aimed at raising funds and mobilising aid for Lebanon today, amid Israel and Hezbollah’s ongoing conflict. In addition to the UN and EU, Israel and Iran are attending, as is Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati. Meanwhile the fight continues on all fronts. There are further reports of Israeli bombing in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria. And rockets were fired at Tel Aviv again.
UN PUTIN – Vladimir Putin will meet UN chief Antonio Guterres for the first time in over two years today to discuss the conflict in Ukraine as well as the escalating crisis in the Middle East. Ukraine has strongly criticised the UN chief’s decision to meet Putin.
BOEING STRIKE – Boeing workers in the Seattle region have rejected the US aerospace giant’s latest contract offer yesterday, extending their nearly six-week strike. The latest Boeing offer had included a 35% wage hike, but did not reinstate a pension plan sought by many employees. Boeing reported a whopping $6.2 billion loss due in part to added costs connected to the strike and to problems with its troubled defence and space business.
FOOTBALL – Some results from the Football Champions League: Barcelona beat Bayern 4-1, Liverpool beat Leipzig 1-0. Lille won 3-1 against Atletico Madrid, and Brest and Leverkusen drew 1-1.
Japan wants to host the Women’s World Cup in 2031 to ignite the domestic game and cut the gap on Europe and North America. Japan is likely to face stiff competition for hosting rights however with a joint bid from the United States and Mexico expected. England and China are also reportedly interested.
BASEBALL – Ten short months after joining the Los Angeles Dodgers with the goal of finally challenging for a championship, Shohei Ohtani is on the threshold of realising his dream. The 30-year-old Japanese superstar heads into the first World Series of his career on Friday, aiming to crown a record-breaking season by capturing baseball’s biggest prize.
RUGBY – Australia-born Sione Tuipulotu will captain Scotland for next month’s matches against Fiji, South Africa, Portugal, and Australia.
