The newly formed special parliamentary committee addressing the Caritas scandal convened for the first time on Wednesday.
The committee, chaired by MP Laurent Zeimet from the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV), will meet weekly to discuss the ongoing issues related to the scandal.
Joining Zeimet are Vice-Presidents Carole Hartmann of the Democratic Party (DP) and Djuna Bernard of the Green Party (Déi Gréng). Taina Bofferding, head of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) parliamentary group, will serve as the rapporteur.
The committee’s primary objective is not to conduct a second investigation into the Caritas scandal but to gain a comprehensive understanding of the events to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Members of the committee have compiled a list of contacts that includes officials from the Caritas Foundation, representatives from the diocese, representatives of the banks involved, and legal experts. The committee aims to finalise its report and recommendations by the end of April 2025.
It is worth noting that the weekly meetings of the special committee will not be broadcast live. MPs from the majority parties, CSV and DP, have opted against live broadcasts “so as not to discourage certain representatives from giving evidence,” as stated on the Chamber of Deputies website.
