“Eight of our citizens have lost their lives and 26 have been injured. The injured were taken to hospitals in the region,” said Hulusi Sahin, without specifying whether foreign nationals were among the casualties.

Carrying 34 passengers from Tekirdag in the west to Antalya, the coach overturned on Sunday morning at 10.20am (7.20am GMT) on the edge of the motorway, which had become slippery due to rain, the governor said.

“There was also fog. It is a junction where drivers should not go fast, yet it appears the bus entered it at high speed,” Mr Sahin said.

Some of the injured are in a serious condition, he added.

A seaside resort on the Mediterranean coast, Antalya welcomes large numbers of domestic and foreign tourists throughout the year.
