
GERMANY STATE VISIT - It is the second day of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s state visit to Luxembourg. Today’s programme includes a visit to the birthplace of Robert Schumann and Clausen as well as various appointments in Belval, notably at the University of Luxembourg.
POLICE VIOLENCE - In light of a judicial investigation into charges of police violence, the public prosecutor’s office announced the arrest of three police officers from Luxembourg City yesterday afternoon.
The alleged acts included aggravated assault and obstruction of justice against an intoxicated person during a procedure to place him in a sobering-up cell. The investigation, under the direction of the examining magistrate, is still ongoing.
SCHOOL RESULTS - Close to three quarters of secondary school students passed their final exams this year, the Education Ministry has revealed in a statement. Pupils enrolled in the ‘Lycée Classique’ had a passing rate of 80%. For those in the ‘général’, on the other hand, the rate was 69%. Female candidates performed better on average than male ones.
155 students finished their final school year with the ‘excellent’ distinction.
SWEDEN NATO - Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has agreed for Sweden to join NATO on the eve of a summit of the alliance in Vilnius. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Sweden’s accession would benefit all members. Today, Ukrainian President Zelensky is expected to join the NATO summit.
Russia’s war in Ukraine is among the top agenda items for NATO leaders along with discussing a future pathway for the war-torn country to join the alliance. There is still no consensus on the issue.
RUTTE OUT - Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has announced he is quitting politics after nearly 13 years in power. Nicknamed “Teflon Mark” for surviving scandals that hit his four governments, the centre-right leader said he would stand down after elections sparked by the collapse of his latest coalition over a row about migration.
As the longest serving leader in the history of the Netherlands, Rutte said that he had “mixed feelings” about bowing out but that it “feels good to pass the baton”.
TODDLER SEARCH - A “more targeted” and selective” search system has been set up to try to find little Emile, who disappeared more than 48 hours ago in a hamlet in the French Alps.
The search perimeter was expanded on Monday in an effort to locate Emile, a two-and-a-half-year-old child who went missing after wandering away from his grandparents’ supervision in Vernet. Approximately sixty soldiers, a helicopter, and a highly skilled scent-tracking dog have been deployed for the search efforts.
MADONNA HEALTH - The popstar Madonna has said she is on the road to recovery after a bacterial infection that required hospitalization, in the pop icon’s first statement since landing in intensive care unit last month. The illness required Madonna to postpone her nearly sold out, 84-date “Celebration” tour that was due to start July 15.
TENNIS - Carlos Alcaraz is in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon. The current number 1 in the world eliminated the Italian Matteo Berettini in 4 sets yesterday. And the American Christopher Eubanks, number 43, surprisingly won in 5 sets, against Stefanos Tsitsipas, number 5 in the world.
In the women’s category, the Tunisian player Ons Jabeur won the top match against Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic and is in the quarter finals.
CYCLING - It’s Stage 10 in the Tour de France today, over 167 kilometers from Vulcania to Issoire. Jonas Vingegaard is in the yellow jersey and the best Luxembourger is Bob Jungels in 35th place.
Meteolux has issued an orange warning for southern parts of the country until this evening, with high temperatures expected throughout the day. However, as the evening draws in, light rain showers are predicted across the country. Winds may reach up to 50 km/h as the day wears on.
Temperatures start off mild at 18-20°C in the morning, rising to highs from 30°C to 35°C in the afternoon in parts of the country, and staying at 29-31°C well into the evening. Fans at the ready!
