MURDER VERDICT – A verdict in a murder trial is expected today at the Luxembourg City Court. Three men are accused of brutally killing a restaurant employee in Kirchberg in 2022. After the 46-year-old woman, working at Vapiano restaurant, was murdered, two of the defendants accused stole €3,000 in cash.

POLITMONITOR SURVEY – The latest Politmonitor survey conducted for RTL and the Luxembourg Wort has revealed that the CSV-DP government under Prime Minister Luc Frieden is not receiving favourable ratings. The findings indicate a growing dissatisfaction among Luxembourgers, with housing remaining the greatest concern, particularly for the younger population. 60% of respondents are also against the proposed pension reform, which includes increasing the required contribution years. The majority support the unions and 69% believe that a parliamentary monarchy is the best form of government for our country.

RARE PLANT DISCOVERED – A plant species believed to have vanished from Luxembourg City nearly a century ago has been rediscovered during the National Museum of Natural History’s annual Biodiversity Weekend. Botanists and scientific collaborators identified Parietaria officinalis, in the Grund district – its first confirmed sighting in the capital since 1933. The species, part of the nettle family, typically grows on nutrient-rich rubble and is thought to have been introduced from the Mediterranean.

MINIBUS ACCIDENT – A person was severely injured Wednesday evening as a minibus collided with a tree on the CR329 between Noertrange and Gruemelscheid. An air ambulance was deployed as a result and the road had to be closed off to traffic. The exact circumstances of the accident remain to be determined.

ISRAEL- IRAN CONFLICT – President Donald Trump has warned he is weighing US military action against Iran, as Israel launched fresh strikes against Tehran earlier today. Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has meanwhile rejected Trump’s demand for an “unconditional surrender”, despite claims from the US leader that Iran wants to “negotiate”.

Further diplomatic efforts are underway to end the Israel-Iran conflict. A meeting between the foreign ministers of Germany, France, the UK, and Iran is planned in Geneva tomorrow. The UN Security Council is also due to meet tomorrow to discuss the conflict. Meanwhile, US President Trump has also declared that he is still ready to negotiate a nuclear agreement with Iran. The US is the only country with the “bunker buster” bombs needed to destroy Iran’s Fordow nuclear plant.

CLIMATE CHANGE – More than 60 top scientists have warned that the pace and level of key climate change indicators are all in uncharted territory. Earth’s surface temperature last year breached 1.5°C for the first time and greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels and deforestation hit a new high in 2024. The scientists say the new findings, published in Earth System Science Data, should be taken as a reality check by policymakers.

Sport

BASKETBALL – According to sports channel ESPN, the Los Angeles Lakers are being sold in a record-breaking $10 billion deal that makes the iconic franchise the highest-valued sports team in US history. The report said the Lakers owners would sell their controlling interest in the team to billionaire Mark Walter, who already owns a minority stake in the franchise.

FOOTBALL – At the Club World Cup, Real Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal, after Manchester City got off to a winning start, beating Wydad Casablanca 2-0. Juventus thrashed Al Ain 5-0 and RB Salzburg took the lead in Group H with a 2-1 win over Mexican outfit Pachuca.

And Luxembourg City will broadcast the Women’s European Championship’s decisive matches in July on a giant screen at the Glacis car park. Football fans can gather to watch the quarter-finals live on 16–18 July, followed by the semi-finals on 22–23 July, and culminating with the final on 27 July.

CYCLING – Former Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas has withdrawn from the rest of the Tour of Switzerland. Thomas fell on the third stage of racing on Tuesday and complained of a dead leg afterwards. The Welshman will end his career this season and is set to feature on this year’s Tour de France.

Weather

We have another pleasant day ahead of us, with the sun almost constantly showing its face. There might be a couple clouds here and there, but nothing major. The temperature will be quite similar to yesterday’s: starting around 15 and 17°C in the morning, and going up to the 27–29°C region at its peak. The wind will be back, with modest gusts of up to 20 km/h – but far from spoiling the party, they are a rather welcome boon, especially as we get closer to the weekend, which promises to bring us close to the mid-thirties temperature-wise.
