
FRIEDEN PORTUGAL - Prime Minister Luc Frieden is on a working visit to Portugal today, he is meeting Prime Minister Luis Montenegro in Lisbon today. According to the Ministry of State, talks will concentrate on strengthening bilateral relations between Luxembourg and Portugal and to address the main subjects currently under discussion at the European Council.
ANIMAL TORTURE - A decapitated head and remains of a goat were found in a barn near Mersch yesterday morning. The goats in question are Valais Blacknecks, a breed commonly used for educational purposes at the Ermsinde High School in Mersch. Forensic investigations are currently underway to piece together what happened. The police have issued a public appeal for anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity to come forward and report it to the Mersch police station.
POSSIBLE TORNADO - A tornado was spotted by RTL readers yesterday, around 4:30 pm, in the sky over Mersch, in the centre of the country. It is currently unknown whether today’s ‘funnel’ touched ground or not. In videos sent to RTL Today, a whirlwind flying over the city is visible before dissipating completely. According to the Kachelmann weather site, and the Boulaide Weather page, these wispy clouds could be described as ‘scud’ clouds, which eventually condense to create ‘wall clouds’ that are the beginning of a tornado’s formation.
DEEP FAKE - In recent days, more reports have come in by users of a Deep Fake video of the Grand Duke circulating on social media platforms. In the video, the voice of the Grand Duke, speaking in German, can be heard inciting people to invest money. The “Maison du Grand-Duc,” the Grand Duke’s administrative body, comments that the video is “obviously” a Deep Fake and has contacted the platforms to delete the video.
TRUMP VERDICT - The jury in New York has convicted Donald Trump of all 34 charges in his hush money trial, making him the first former or serving President to be found guilty of a crime. The case relates to falsifying business records to hide money, paid to the adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. Trump claimed the trial was rigged and his lawyers say they will appeal. Sentencing is on July 11. UKRAINE WAR - Officials in Washington say that President Biden has given permission for Ukraine to use American-supplied weapons to strike back at military targets across the border in Russia. The relaxation on restrictions would be specifically to help to defend the embattled Kharkiv region.
BIDEN FRANCE - President Emmanuel Macron will host Joe Biden next week for the US leader’s first state visit to France after both men attend commemorations for the World War II D-Day landings, with talks set to grapple with Ukraine, the Middle East and trade. Biden’s visit on June 8 in Paris will come after the June 6 ceremony in Normandy marking 80 years since the D-Day landings. About a million people are expected to attend the D-Day commemorations in France, including King Charles III and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
SPAIN AMNESTY -Spain’s parliament has given the final green light to a controversial amnesty bill for Catalan separatists, paving the way for the return of their figurehead Carles Puigdemont after years of self-imposed exile.The legislation seeks to draw a line under years of efforts to prosecute those involved in the failed 2017 Catalan independence bid that triggered Spain’s worst political crisis in decades.
FOOTBALL - The UEFA Champions League final between Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid is taking place at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. Dortmund face the acid test after a fairytale run to the final final as a star-studded Real Madrid roll into Wembley expecting to be crowned European champions for a 15th time.No club can come close to the Spanish giants’ success in the competition and they are strong favourites against a Dortmund side that have beaten the odds just to make it to London.
According to British media reports, Chelsea have appointed Leicester’s Enzo Maresca as their new head coach. It is said he will be joining the Blues on a five-year contract, plus an option of a further year. Chelsea were looking for a new manager after parting company with Mauricio Pochettino.
BASKETBALL - The Dallas Mavericks, fueled by 36 points each from Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, have routed the Minnesota Timberwolves 124-103 to clinch the Western Conference crown and book an NBA title showdown with the Boston Celtics.The Celtics will host game one of the championship series on June 6.
TENNIS - And in tennis, Novak Djokovic has reached the French Open last 32 for the 19th successive year. Defending champion Djokovic cracked 43 winners past Spain’s 63rd-ranked Roberto Carballes Baena to canter to a 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 win. Djokovic goes on to face 30th seed Lorenzo Musetti.
Iga Swiatek is looking to become just the second woman after Serena Williams to complete the clay-court treble of Madrid, Rome and French Opens in the same season. She is playing against the Czech player Marie Bouzkova.
US Open champion Coco Gauff goes up against Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska. On the men’s side in Paris, Alcaraz will take on Sebastian Korda while Australian Open champion Luc Sinner will play Pavel Kotov, the 25-year-old Russian.
