
BORDER CHECKS – From today, there will be checks again at the German borders for the next six months. The new controls have been in place since midnight on Germany’s borders with Belgium and the Netherlands. During the day they will be joined by Luxembourg and Denmark. The German government says increased controls will limit illegal migration and protect against the dangers posed by Islamist terrorism and serious crime. According to Luxembourg’s Minister for Home Affairs, Léon Gloden traffic for cross-border commuters should not be affected.
FATAL ACCIDENT – A fatal accident occurred on the Rue de Trèves in Findel yesterday. According to police reports, a female driver lost control of her vehicle for reasons still unknown and crashed into a tree. Emergency services, including two ambulances and fire brigades from the city, Sandweiler, and Findel, were despatched to the scene. Her 38-year-old passenger died at the scene despite treatment by emergency medical staff. The driver sustained minor injuries.
BACK TO SCHOOL – It’s back to school today. For around 62,500 primary school students and 5,600 teachers, the holiday is over. Secondary school starts again during the week.
TRAIN COMMUTE – Commuters from France and southern Luxembourg can once again expect regular train schedules from today. Train services between Bettembourg and Luxembourg will resume after a two-month suspension, a day French border workers and residents have eagerly awaited.
SPEED LIMIT – There will be no blanket rule for lowering the speed limit from 50 to 30 km/h across all Luxembourg towns and villages. This was confirmed by the Minister for Mobility, Yuricko Backes this week-end. She said that municipalities should have the authority to make these decisions, stating that “it’s [their] responsibility”.
TRUMP ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT – The FBI says it’s investigating what appears to be a second assassination attempt on Donald Trump. He was playing golf on his own course in Florida. He says he’s safe and unharmed. Secret service agents who were on the course near the former US President spotted the barrel of a gun sticking out from bushes and later found an AK-47-style assault rifle and a GoPro action camera. US media have named the suspected gunman, who has been detained, as Ryan Routh – a 58-year-old from Hawaii.
EUROPE FLOODING – A firefighter has died during a flood rescue in Austria and one person drowned in Poland, as torrential rain caused by Storm Boris continues to wreak havoc across central Europe. In Romania, five people have died, while four people have been reported missing in the Czech Republic. The Austrian province around Vienna has been declared a disaster area, while Poland’s prime minister Donald Tusk has declared a state of emergency. The storm has brought some of the worst flooding in more than 30 years and more downpours are forecast until at least the end of today.
EMMY AWARDS – The 76th Emmy Awards delivered several surprises. The Japanese epic “Shogun” won 18 Emmys, the most ever won by a series in a single season, including best drama, best actor and best actress. HBO’s “Hacks” sparked a surprise, taking the prize for best comedy series over “The Bear.” Netflix’s word-of-mouth smash hit “Baby Reindeer” took top honors for best limited series.
TENNIS – Luxembourg has qualified for the World Group I play-off in 2025 in the Davis Cup. Gilles Müller’s team showed off their skills this weekend with a score of 3:2 in favour of Luxembourg against New Zealand.
FORMULA 1 – Oscar Piastri has won Azerbaijan Grand Prix for McLaren. His win ended Red Bull’s more than two-year domination and confirmed that McLaren are now the team to beat having outscored all their rivals in the last seven races.
GOLF – The United States have beaten Europe to win first Solheim Cup since 2017. Second-ranked Lilia Vu captured the deciding half-point and the United States defeated Europe 15.5-12.5 on Sunday.
FOOTBALL – Some results from international football.
In the Bundesliga, Augsburg won 3-1 against St. Pauli. Bremen beat Mainz 2-1.
In France, Lens and Lyon drew 0-0.
And in England, Arsenal beat Tottenham 1-0.
ATHLETICS – Kenya’s Brimin Misoi and Ethiopian star Workenesh Edesa Gurmesa both smashed records at the Sydney Marathon yesterday. Misoi sliced 46 seconds off the previous best set two years ago by compatriot Moses Kibet, crossing the line in 2hrs 6mins 17sec. While Edesa, ranked 10 in the world, was even more impressive, shattering the old record of 2:24:33 set five years ago by Kenyan Stella Barsosio by almost three minutes. She finished in 2:21.41.
It’s a warmer start but the week is beginning under clouds. Anticipate a few drops of rain, with light showers forecast for the afternoon. While the past few days have boasted largely sunny skies, a paltry three hours of sunshine are expected as we tip into autumn. Morning temperatures start around 12–15°C, rising to 16–19°C in the afternoon.
