
CITY STABBING - Police have confirmed that three people were injured in a stabbing early on Sunday morning around 5am in Limpertsberg. The two suspects who were arrested yesterday are said to be professional basketball players competing in Luxembourg’s first division: Londell King (Heffingen) and Leon Ayer (Résidence Walfer). Ayer is currently the league’s top scorer, averaging 31 points per game. They were arrested on Sunday morning, and both will be presented before an investigating judge today.
MANSLAUGHER TRIAL - A manslaughter case from 20 January 2023 is scheduled to go to trial before the summer holidays with no exact date given yet. Following the conclusion of the investigation and judicial procedures, the defendants in the case have been identified as a coach and the father of one of the football players.
GARE PROJECT - The City of Luxembourg, in collaboration with UP_FOUNDATION, has launched an ambitious project, MEGARE, aimed at fostering social cohesion and empowering children in the Gare neighbourhood. At its launch, the project will roll out with two initial programmes, including a child-led mentorship programme that pairs newly arrived children in Luxembourg with trained local “buddy guides” and a programme engaging children in interactive tours of the Gare district.
PETITIONS ONLINE - 13 new petitions have been launched, which will be debated in parliament if they receive 4,500 signatures by the 27 February. The requests of the petitioners concern politics, education, and culture, including a phone ban for teachers, cafés closing at 10pm, and sanctions for Israel.
GAZA CEASEFIRE - 90 Palestinians have been released from jail in the occupied West Bank, as part of the Gaza ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. Earlier, three Israeli women who had been held hostage for 15 months were freed. Humanitarian aid has also been entering Gaza.
TRUMP INAUGURATION - Donald Trump addressed a victory rally in Washington on the eve of his second inauguration as US President. He told an arena, packed with supporters, that the United States was about to begin a new era of prosperity. Trump will be sworn in as the 47th US president at 6pm our time. Because of the wintry conditions, the inauguration will take place inside the US Capitol in Washington.
US TIKTOK - TikTok is back up and running in the US, after Donald Trump said he would sign an executive order giving the Chinese-owned app a 90-day reprieve from a law banning it on national security grounds. He said companies such as Apple and Google would not face sanctions for allowing the app.
WEF DAVOS - The World Economic Forum kicks off in the Swiss Alpine resort on the same day as the presidential inauguration of Trump, who will not be in Davos but will make an online appearance later in the week. Global charity Oxfam said in a report that Trump’s election win and tax-cut plans are a boon to billionaires whose combined wealth already grew by another $2 trillion last year to $15 trillion.
ATHLETICS - Luxembourg’s Patrizia van der Weken delivered a standout performance at the CMCM Indoor Meeting at the Coque at the weekend, winning the 60-meter final in 7.07 seconds. Her time shaved 0.02 seconds off her own national record, and she currently ranks as the fastest in the world this year.
FOOTBALL - Some international football results, starting with the German Bundesliga: Union Berlin won 2-1 against Mainz and Augsburg beat Bremen 2-0.
In France, Marseille and Strasbourg drew a 1-1 tie.
And in England, Manchester City beat Ipswich Town 6-0. Nottingham won 3-2 against Southampton, and Manchester United lost to Brighton 3-1.
AMERICAN FOOTBALL - The race to the Super Bowl is firmly underway as the teams are now down to the final 14. The Buffalo Bills won 27-25 at home against the Baltimore Ravens, and now play against the Kansas City Chiefs for the so-called conference title. The Super Bowl is on the night of February 9th to 10th.
