
TAWERN SHOOTING – A 55-year-old woman was seriously injured yesterday morning after being shot in Tawern, Germany, not far from Grevenmacher and the Luxembourg border. The suspected attacker, identified as the woman’s 64-year-old partner, was later found dead after police stormed an apartment where he had barricaded himself. Authorities evacuated nearby homes but stressed there was no danger to the public at any time. The woman remains in hospital receiving treatment.
AIRPORT ARREST – A 26-year-old man wanted on serious charges in Portugal has been arrested at Luxembourg Airport while attempting to board a flight to Ireland. According to police, the suspect was identified during routine security checks at Findel Airport as he prepared to depart for Dublin. He is wanted by Portuguese authorities for attempted murder and illegal weapons possession related to a 2024 shooting incident.
TRIER FIRE – A major fire in a warehouse of a waste disposal company in the Moselle port in Trier kept firefighters busy until late last night. According to the newspaper, the Trierischer Volksfreund, more than 200 rescue workers were deployed to the scene. One firefighter was lightly injured. Residents of several Trier districts have been urged to keep their windows closed as a precaution.
MICHELIN STARS – Louis Linster has been awarded a second Michelin star by the Michelin Guide BeLux. The restaurants Grünewald Chef’s Table and Archibald De Prince received their first star, while René Mathieu reclaimed his. Luxembourg now boasts two 2-starred restaurants.
RAIL STRIKE – Train services between Luxembourg and Belgium are likely to be disrupted until 10pm today, due to industrial action on the Belgian railways. Passengers are advised to anticipate delays and possible train cancellations.
CANADA ELECTIONS – Prime Minister Mark Carney has won Canada’s election, leading his Liberal Party to a new term in power after convincing voters his experience managing economic crises prepared him to confront US President Donald Trump.
UKRAINE WAR – Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a surprise three-day ceasefire from 8–10 May, coinciding with Moscow’s World War II Victory Day commemorations. Moscow said it expected Kyiv to issue a similar order, and that it stood ready to respond to any violations of the possible halt in fighting.
SPAIN/PORTUGAL POWER – Electricity was cut off across Spain and Portugal and part of southern France yesterday in a massive blackout that impacted millions of people. The cause for the shutdown has not yet emerged, though wild rumours have spread on messaging networks about cyber attacks.
VATICAN CONCLAVE – The Vatican has announced that Catholic cardinals will meet on 7 May to start voting for a new pope, a week after the death of Pope Francis. So-called ‘Princes of the Church’ under the age of 80 will meet in the Sistine Chapel to choose a new religious leader.
FOOTBALL – The semi-finals of the Champions League are kicking off today. Arsenal is playing Paris St Germain at 9pm tonight. You can watch this game live on RTL Today. Tomorrow Barcelona will take on Inter Milan.
According to Spanish media, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has agreed to take over the Brazilian national team. Ancelotti has not hidden that a potential exit is on the cards and said his future was “a topic for the next weeks” after defeat by Barcelona on Saturday.
CRICKET – Indian batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi has become the youngest to hit a senior T20 century at 14 years and 32 days as he powered Rajasthan Royals’ successful chase against Gujarat Titans in the IPL. The teenager said it was like a dream to score a century in the IPL.
