
CITY SHOOTING - A person has been injured in a shooting in Luxembourg City. At around 5pm yesterday, the police responded to an incident on Rue du Fort Neipperg, where preliminary reports indicated that an individual sustained an injury to the abdomen. A large-scale search for the perpetrators has been launched by the police. There are no more details for now.
AMPACET STRIKE - It’s the 10th strike day at Ampacet in Dudelange. Today the OGBL union will hold a protest outside parliament, demanding that the Minister of Labour, Georges Mischo makes the issue a priority. The union has implored the management of the American plastics company to return to the negotiating table to find a solution, following unsuccessful negotiations initiated last spring.
CITY HOUSING PLANS - Luxembourg’s City Mayor Lydie Polfer has unveiled Luxembourg City’s budget for 2024, highlighting major housing investments and a focus on sustainability. The municipality plans on investing €500 million into housing over the coming six years. Undertakings include four apartment buildings in Merl and the ‘StadePark’ project around the former national stadium.
LUXID - A group of Luxembourg businesses including RTL has launched a new digital identification service titled LuxID. LuxID offers a free secure login that can be used for the various organisations involved in the project, including Cactus, CFL and POST. The service is designed to make life easier for users, creating a unified login instead of separate ones for each site.
ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR - The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the only way to finish the war in Hamas quickly was to use overwhelming force. The Israeli military says yesterday was the most intense day of fighting in the war so far. The UN has warned the humanitarian situation in Gaza is getting worse by the hour. HEAT RECORD - Europe’s climate monitor, Copernicus has said this year will be the hottest in recorded history after an “extraordinary” November became the sixth record-breaking month in a row. November also contained two days that were 2C warmer than pre-industrial levels. Not one such day had ever before been recorded.
FOOTBALL - The Luxembourg Football Federation (FLF) has officially confirmed that Luc Holtz, the 54-year-old coach of the Luxembourg national team, has signed a two-year contract extension, taking his tenure until the end of 2025.
In the Women’s Nations League, the Luxembourg national team drew 1-1 with Lithuania yesterday. They are now in third place in their group. Turkey is in first place. Germany and the Netherlands have booked their places to join France and world champions Spain in the semi-finals of the Nations League which take place in February.
It’s the round of 16 in the German DFB-Pokal. Kaiserslautern won 2-0 against Nürnberg, while Gladbach beat Wolfsburg 1-0, St. Pauli defeated Hamburg 4-1 and Düsseldorf won 2-1 in Magdeburg.
