The Paks nuclear plant , discussed in the deal reached between Russia and the EU in 2014, is to be expanded.
Russia’s nuclear industry has not yet been affected by the EU sanctions over its barbaric attacks on Ukraine. Hungary also has not been fully in support of the sanctions previously imposed.
The Paks site currently generates 40% of Hungary’s electricity supply. With the additional two reactors, the nuclear power station will double. These could be ready for service by 2030.
The project costs €12.5bn and is largely financed by Russia.
“This is a big step, an important milestone,” Mr Szijjarto said in a Facebook post.
“In this manner we will ensure Hungary’s energy security in the long term and protect Hungarians from wild swings in energy prices.”
