Luxembourg

BIANKA TRIAL - In the case surrounding the missing baby Bianka Bisdorff, the verdict will be handed down today. The prosecution has ruled out that the child is still alive and is demanding 15 years in prison for the mother. Bianka would be 7 years old today.

2021 CENSUS - The 2021 census has shown that Luxembourg’s population has increased by more than 25% compared to 2011, reaching almost 644,000 residents. STATEC presented their findings from the census yesterday, which also indicated that there are slightly more men than women residing in Luxembourg. The average age has also risen to 39.7 years, one year more than it was ten years ago. The average birth rate is 1.4 children.

World

STATE OF THE UNION - President Joe Biden has urged unity and touted a blue-collar economic resurgence in a rousing State of the Union speech. Biden’s 72-minute address has been seen as a blueprint for a widely expected 2024 re-election bid.

TURKEY/SYRIA QUAKE - A huge rescue effort is continuing in Southern Turkey and Syria for a second night in freezing conditions to find survivors of Monday’s earthquakes, which killed more than 9500 people. There are fears that the number of casualties is still rising, as thousands of people are still missing. Thousands of soldiers along with international rescue teams are taking part in the operation.

Luxembourg has dispatched a member of the fire and recue corps’ humanitarian intervention group, who will assist in coordinating the search and rescue teams on the ground.

ZELENSKY VISIT - EU officials are hoping that Ukrainian President Zelensky will head to Brussels tomorrow to meet European leaders in a largely symbolic but nevertheless keenly anticipated visit after months of European support for Ukraine. The potential trip to the heart of the EU is being kept under tight wraps due to security concerns. But European Parliament sources have said they’re ready to hold a special sitting for Zelensky to give a speech, before he would attend a long-planned summit of the 27 EU leaders across town. This would be only his second trip abroad since Russia invaded his country almost a year ago.

BOWIE LYRICS - The handwritten lyrics for David Bowie’s song ‘Jean Genie’ have sold at auction for nearly 70,000 dollars. The track from his Aladdin Sane album was released as a single in 1972 and reached Number 2 in the UK single charts. The singer, who died in 2016 had given the A4 sheet with 18 lines of lyrics to the founder of the first David Bowie fanclub in the 1970s.

Sport

FOOTBALL WC 2030 - Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay have launched their official joint bid to host the Football World Cup in 2030, exactly 100 years after the event was first held, in Montevideo. Competition is intensifying before FIFA chooses a host in 2024. The South Americans’ main challenge is a joint bid from Spain, Portugal and Ukraine, which has the backing of European governing body UEFA.

SKIING WC - Frenchman Alexis Pinturault has won gold in the combination at the Alpine Ski World Championship in Courchevel-Méribel. Today it’s the women’s Super G.
